Agnes B. Smith

September 10, 1923 — March 14, 2023

Agnes B. Smith, 99, formerly of Oxford, passed away March 14, 2023, at Good Shepherd Fairview Home. Agnes was born in Hoboken, NJ, to W. Albert and Annie Buchhop. Agnes grew up in Middletown, NJ, and graduated from Middletown Township High School in 1940. She had one brother, Albert, who lost his life in World War 2, and one sister, Norma Mahoney. Agnes married Bill Smith on Saint Patrick’s Day 1947. They had two sons, David and Jack.

Agnes worked for the borough of Atlantic Highlands (NJ) as deputy tax collector for many years before her retirement in 1983. She and Bill retired the same day and moved to Oxford the following day. They enjoyed taking long drives with their son, Jack, and traveling and sightseeing in many parts of the country. Agnes cared for Jack until she was in her early nineties, a perfect example of a mother’s sacrificial and selfless love.

Agnes was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her two sons, her sister, and her brother. She is survived by four nieces: Ann, Martha, and Susan Mahoney and Lois Hammond. Susan was her aunt’s greatest source of support, helping her and ensuring that she received the best care in her later years. Agnes is also survived by two grandnephews (Jeffrey and Daniel Hammond), a great grandniece (Emilia Hammond), and her “daughter-in-love,” Allison Campbell.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Behe Funeral Home in Oxford. A graveside service at Riverside Cemetery will be held later in the spring with Rev. Norman Holtz officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
