During the early morning hours of December 31, 2022, Caroline E. Whitney passed from this life to the next, where she joined her husband, daughter, and many others that passed before her.
Born January 13, 1936, in Oxford, NY to Maurice and Goldie Money Law, she attended and graduated from Oxford Academy and Central Schools. While attending high school, she met her high school sweetheart Stanley, they dated and became husband and wife on May 29, 1954. Following him in the military they left the Oxford area but returned after Stanley’s discharge from the United States Air Force to live in Norwich, NY. Caroline then received her Associates degree from Cobleskill College majoring in Cosmetology. Upon her graduation she opened and operated a private hair salon in their home. Soon, motherhood was calling, and she closed her salon to attend to her children, but also found the time to assist with their private businesses: Whitney Laundromats of Oxford and Norwich, NY, and Whit’s Ice Cream and Mini Golf, Fresh Produce and Nursery, located on Rt 12 in Norwich, where she proudly sold plants that she had nurtured and grown herself.
Caroline had a green thumb and was an avid gardener. She loved her wild birds that were always guaranteed a meal, no matter what the season. She was also known for her love of Yankee Baseball, and her joy in playing cards with family and friends, although she might possibly pull up her cards and quit if she happened to be losing.
Caroline is survived by her three sons and their wives Jeff (Mary Ann), Steve (Shannon), and Marc (Ronda), all of Norwich, NY. She is also survived by her sister Barbara Lawton, her brother-in-law Maurice (Mossy) Paden, her very special friend Jim Mitchell and her beloved kitty companion, Shiloh. Caroline is also survived by several grandchildren, step and great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Caroline was predeceased by her husband Stanley Whitney and their daughter Loretta Rene. She was also predeceased by her sister Lola Paden, and brother-in-law Lawrence Lawton.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date, to be announced. Memorial contributions in Caroline’s memory can be made to the Chenango SPCA, The American Red Cross, or a charity of your choosing.
