Catherine Cowles McKenzie, 92 of Oxford passed away peacefully on May 11, 2020 at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Residential Health Care Facility. She was born on May 13, 1927 in Oxford, a daughter of the late Leon and Mabel (Burke) Cowles.
Catherine was a lifelong resident of Oxford and graduated from Oxford Academy and Central School in 1945 and the University of Rochester in 1949. After college she taught in Jordan, NY for two years prior to moving back to Oxford, where she married Harold W. McKenzie on April 7, 1951. She loved raising her family and substitute teaching in Oxford. She enjoyed golfing and downhill skiing. She was a
member of the Oxford United Methodist Church since 1951. She belonged to the Chenango Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Joseph Jefferson Book Club, the Oxford Historical Society, the Oxford Ladies Birthday Club, the Women's Morning Coffee Club, the Oxford Retired Teachers, and was active at the Oxford Senior Center. She enjoyed water aerobics for many years at the YMCA.
She is survived by her children, Deborah and Kevin Rose of Sand Lake, NY, Margaret "Peggy" and Constantine Papanastassiou of Stow, MA, and Harold "Hal" McKenzie of Binghamton; her grandchildren, Eileen and Chris O'Connor, Collin Rose, Katrina (Papanastassiou) Amaral and Miles Amaral, Alex Papanastassiou, and Nick Papanastassiou; her great grandchildren, Evan, Jack, Kate and Ryan O'Connor
She is also survived by her niece, Mary Jane Cowles McMahan and her brothers in law, David and Helen McKenzie and Daryl and Mary McKenzie. She was predeceased by her brother LeGrand (Lee) and Laura Cowles, niece Catherine Cowles and nephew David Cowles Hungerford.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Chenango Memorial Hospital, RHCF for the care provided to Catherine.
Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, a memorial service will be held at the Foundation Church, Oxford at a later date to be announced.
