Doris t. potter

July 10, 1934 — January 18, 2020

Doris T. Cady Potter, 85, previously of Oxford and McDonough, passed away on January 18, 2020 at her home in Norwich, after a short illness. She was born July 10, 1934 in Norwich, NY to Leeman & Ruth Ingraham Cady. She attended Oxford Academy School (Class of 1953) and was extremely proud to be a Blackhawk. On March 27, 1954, she married Kenneth R. Potter, Sr. They lived the majority of their married life in McDonough, NY. Ken predeceased her on July 9, 1995.
Doris worked her whole adult life for Chenango County, in the Treasurer's Office, and then ended her career as Deputy Tax Collector, in the Tax Department. Doris was very involved in her community and she volunteered and helped many groups in McDonough: Women's Fire Auxiliary, Home Improvement, Episcopal Church, and then the United Church of Oxford.
Doris had many activities she enjoyed. She was an avid sports fan. Whether it was the NY Giants, Syracuse University Basketball, or her grandchildren's' teams, she was their strongest supporter. She attended many events, especially basketball and football over the years. Doris loved playing cards and it was rumored she was the best card player in Chenango County; however, we could never prove who started that rumor. She always carried a deck of cards in her purse, because you just never knew when and where you could start up a game. She loved to cross stitch and gave many projects away to family members. She took great pleasure in cooking, baking, and was famous for her bread & butter pickles. She was always ready to deliver food to someone in need and her family meals had enough food on the table to feed anyone who walked in the door. Doris had a strong group of friends from her years of working for the county. These women played a major role in her life for decades, even after retirement. She had a full life and was loved by many, she will be missed.
Doris was the happiest when she was surrounded by her family. She is survived by her two children: Diane Potter Branham (Bob) of Norwich, and Kenneth "Butch" Potter of Dryden. She has four grandchildren: Michael Branham (Marissa) of Sidney; Beth Branham Groot (Matt) of Fairport; Kenneth "Rich" Potter (Christine) of Port Crane; and Keith Potter of Dryden. She was blessed with seven great-grandchildren and they were the joy of her life: Olivia, Connor, and Camden Groot; Andrew Branham; and Dominick, Damon, and Dante Potter. She is also survived by one brother-in-law, Derwin Jones, and a sister-in-law, Elsie Potter Congdon.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by all her siblings and their spouses: Charles & Beattie Cady Howe, Fred & Mabel "Pickie" Cady Foote, Raymond & Mabel Cady, L J "Que" & Belle Cady, Lawrence "Skip" & Marjorie Cady, Chuck & Marie Cady Ross, Lora Cady Jones; and in-laws Elton & Virginia Potter Beckwith, Robert & Winifred Potter Lobdell, Harold & Katherine Potter Leach, and George & Ruth Potter.
Funeral services will be at Behe Funeral Home, Oxford, NY on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, officiated by Pastor Rich Howard. Calling hours are 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with funeral services immediately following. Burial will be in the spring at Union Cemetery in McDonough.
