Edward Joseph Proppe, Jr.
Passed peacefully at home on March 18, 2024, surrounded by family. Born to Edward J. Proppe, Sr. and Mary (Niegos) Proppe on November 2, 1939, in Fulton, NY. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Karol (Hayden) Proppe; Daughter Kari Hernandez-Proppe (Justino); Grandchildren Kathryn Proppe, Timothy Proppe, Abigail Jewell (Nathan), Samantha “Grunt” Proppe (Chavis Howard), Kalee Proppe, Hayden Proppe, Jr., Christopher Hernandez-Proppe, Nicolas Hernandez-Proppe; Eric Proppe and 7 other great grandchildren; His sisters, Carole Holcomb, Colleen Proppe, and Geraldine Chalifoux; His best friend and cousin, Donald Dunn, Jr. He is preceded in death by his parents; and sons Edward J. Proppe, III, and Hayden J. Proppe, and many life-long friends.
He proudly served in the Navy after high school, serving from 1960 to 1964, where he was stationed on the USS Forrestal (CV-59) and the USS Wasp (CV-18). He then served two additional years in the Navy Reserves. He was a member of the American Legion. He loved volunteering as a DAV driver for the Syracuse VA. A man of many trades, he worked in sales and manufacturing for various companies.
He cared deeply for his family, friends, and beloved pets. He would do almost anything to help someone in need. He was known to have a camera in hand, capturing events and special moments for many people in our community. When his children were growing up, he served as a little league coach and Explorer Scout leader. An avid Giants fan with an extreme sweet tooth, he will be remembered for his sense of humor and giving spirit.
The family would like to thank all of the medical staff that took care of him over the past year, and those who visited him or helped out during his numerous medical stays.
A visitation hour and memorial service will take place on Saturday, April 6th beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the McDonough Calvary Community Center, (115 County Route 7 in McDonough) with a repast to follow at the McDonough Fire Station. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice & Palliative Care of Chenango County. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Behe Funeral Home Inc.
