Gary D. Smith, 78 of Norwich passed away on January 26, 2023, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich, NY. He was born on September 29, 1944, in Norwich, a son of the late Norman and Beatrice (Swartz) Smith. On October 25, 1969, he married Diane Menard, who survives.


Besides his wife, Diane; he is survived by his children, Todd Smith, Lisa and Todd Rissberger, and Heather and Nick Fretto; his grandchildren, Curtis Rissberger, Carsyn Rissberger, Nolan Fretto, Nevelynn Fretto, and Norah Fretto; and his sister, Linda Munro.


Gary graduated from Norwich High School and served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of Christy Rock Post, VFW, Warren Eaton Post, American Legion, and Fort Hill Post, American Legion. With his love of hunting and fishing, he was a member of the Lake Placid Rod and Gun Club and the McDonough Rod and Gun Club. Gary enjoyed playing golf, photography, the latest technology, good food, traveling, gardening, genealogy, and family gatherings.


A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, February 5, 2023, at the VFW, 61 East Main St., Norwich, NY from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM. Military honors will be accorded at 2:15 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gary D. Smith Scholarship Fund, c/o Christy Rock Post, VFW, 61 East Main St., Norwich, NY 13815.
