Harold R. Kappauf resident of Oxford NY, died unexpectedly Saturday, December 5th, 2020 at the age of 76. Harold (Hal) was born on Long Island, to Harold O. Kappauf and Mable (Sprague) Kappauf. He was one of two sons and was loved by many. Harold moved to Oxford in 1971 purchased his first farmhouse and became a postal worker. He was postmaster of Oxford for several years until he retired in 1992. Harold was a kind and caring person, who always wanted the best for people. While serving as the post master of Oxford, he attempted to make sure that everyone got their mail, even when his patrons families grew up, and mail came back as undeliverable, he would say, "You know, Mr. and Mrs. Smith used to have a daughter named Jenny, and I think she married a Davis, let's try and deliver it to them and see what happens." He tried to help everyone when he could. In his retirement he enjoyed a simple life on his farm on Painter Hill, until moving in 2003. He loved working the farm with his sheep and chickens and eventually horses (although I am not sure he loved those as much as Nell did). What he did love was spending time with people and talking. In preparation for horses, he helped construct a second barn, where even the children his wife babysat everyday pitched in with their little red shovels. (One of his many favorite memories). Upon moving off the hill he needed to find different things to do with his time. He took up gardening, canning, bread making, wine making, and jam making. If you were ever lucky enough to receive a loaf of bread from him, know that you were special to him in some way, and that loaf of bread probably came with a bottle of wine or jam. It was in this manner that he passed, he was coming home from just purchasing some canning jars full of food, that he was going to have to empty and clean. "It will give me something to do for a couple of days." Hal was predeceased by his parents Harold O. Kappauf and Mable (Sprague) Kappauf and his brother Frank. H. Kappauf. Hal is survived by his wife of 43 years Kathleen (Hovick) Kappauf and his six children, Carintha (Horstman) Dietrich and her husband Mark and two grandchildren Jordan and Hailey. Eric Horstman and girlfriend Lisa, Jolee (Horstman) Mrozinski and her husband Joseph and their three boys, Trenton, Carson and Donovan. His son Clayton and wife Megan (Muzzy) Kappauf and their four children, Colette, Ahnalee, Dagfinn and Calista. His daughter Nellene (Kappauf) Palmere and her husband Vince and their two children Isabella and Brody, and finally his daughter Katherine Kappauf. Although he may be gone, he will never be forgotten, as he touched so many in his life and was happy for every moment he had.
