John H. Carr “Pa” or “Dad”, 86, longtime resident and dairy farmer of Greene NY, passed away peacefully at home with his daughter (granddaughter) Kristie by his side after battling a prosthetic knee infection. He was predeceased by his wife Janice of 68 years on December 15, 2022, his son Jerry Carr, granddaughters Brittany Carr and Guilouse Bush, grandson Dakota Bush and great great grandson Little Fig, brothers Paul, Bert (Maureen), Donald, Charlie (Eleanor), George, Raymond Carr, and his parents John M and Mary (Philips) Carr.
Pa was born on the old Carr Farm in the family farmhouse in Smithville August 6th, 1936. John worked on the family farm until he married Janice on April 3, 1953, at the Greene FUMC. Once married John and Janice moved a few separate times so John could work as a hired man on dairy farms. John worked for the Stafford and Cotteral farms in Dryden where part of the Cornell University farms is currently located. Moving back to Chenango County, Ma and Pa bought a small farm on King Road in Greene where he worked for himself until he and Mom decided to rent the Kramnich farm located in Coventry. Pa worked for Ring and Stern on the farm where the current Walmart, Lowes and Chenango County Sheriff’s Office is in Norwich. In June 1976 Ma and Pa returned to Greene /Smithville areas buying the Poole farm and 55 acres of the “old farm” on King Road naming it Carrland Farms and that is where they remained until their passing. Pa was happiest on the farm and Mom always put her share of demanding work in helping Pa bail hay while watching the kids in their playpen in the shade and they had plenty of stories to share.
Pa is survived by his loving daughter (granddaughter) Kristie Carr (John Gregware) and her children Ariel (Ethan) Nelson of NC, John Moran, Rochelle (Kyle) Crispell, Caden, Melana, Lillie, and Noah Gregware and Pa’s great-great grandson Kolton Crispell who he adored beyond measure, all from the Greene/Smithville area. John and Janice had lived with Kristie for over 5 years before their passing. Pa (Ma when she was able) and Kristie traveled many cow paths, dirt roads and country sides many memories were made, and will be cherished forever.
He is also survived by his sons Jeffrey (Michelle)Carr and Jamey (Robyn)Carr of South Carolina and James (Kelly)Carr of Greene. Grandchildren Jonathon Carr, Daniel (Bridgett)Carr, Daniel (Megg)Bush, Nicholas Carr, Lisa (Brad)Rowe, Matt Carr and JR (Christina) Carr. Great grandchildren Braylee, Dylan (Abbey), Grace, Macaylah, Adison, Adialeze, Lyla, Bentley, Anna, and Rory. Great-great granddaughter Ava. Surviving, as well are his sister Betty (Del) Sellers and his brother Lenny Carr of SC. Along with many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and fellow farmers.
Pa is also survived by his loving, protective and devoted dog Buddy who is lost without him. A special neighbor Lance Dopp who he thought of as another grandson and Nick Austin who has been taking care of Pa’s dairy farm and making him proud. Special friends and hunters Frank, Joe, and Ken of Pennsylvania that Pa loved catching up with every hunting season and the guys always commented on how Pa was one of a kind, a generous, trusting, and compassionate man. Words cannot express how deeply missed he will be and how much wisdom he has taught so many.
