On Saturday, April 25, 2020, Julia Bernadette McBride, a resident of Oxford, New York and known to her friends and family as Bernadette, closed her eyes and went home to God. She died peacefully at Norwich Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Norwich, NY. She was eighty-five years old. She had a life well-lived.
Julia Bernadette is survived by her five children and their spouses, Kathleen McBride Anderson of Oxford, NY, Julia McBride Pocalyko (Patrick) of New City, NY, Hon. Joseph A. McBride (LouAnn) of Norwich, NY, Christopher McBride (Robin) of Philadelphia, Pa., and Edward McBride (Ann Marie) of Monroe, NY. She is also survived by her eleven grandchildren and spouses, David, Patrick (Julie), Bryan (Laura), Jonothan (Beth), Allyson (Arnold), Peter, Michael, Ryan, Connor, Siobhan, and Heather, and nine great-grandchildren. She was the proud and loving aunt and grand-aunt to her many nieces and nephews and her grand-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings and their spouses, Theresa (Marco), Kathleen (Bill), and Patrick, and her brother and sister-in-law, Peter McBride, and Ann McBride Sexton. She will be with them now in Heaven.
Born the second of four children in 1934, to Patrick and Catherine White, in County Cork, Ireland, as a young child, Julia Bernadette moved with her family to the United States. She was raised in the Bronx, New York, lived in St. Luke's Parish, went to Catholic Schools and graduated from St. Vincent Ferrer High School in Manhattan in 1952. After graduation, she worked for the NYS Port Authority before and during her marriage to Joseph A. McBride, until they began a family in 1956.
Within a few years of starting a family, Julia Bernadette and Joseph moved from the Bronx to a home they purchased in Bardonia, New York. They then, finally, purchased a home to raise their family in New City, New York, in Rockland County, where she continued to live for more than 25 years. Julia Bernadette loved being home with her children, and once they were in school, she returned to work as a secretary in the Rockland County Probation Department. Although she loved her job, her love and care for her family remained her primary vocation. Bernadette lived for a few years with her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Pat, and helped care for her four grandchildren, whom she adored. In 1987, she moved to Riverhead, New York, to live with her brother and help care for her sister, who had cancer. Julia Bernadette transferred her job to work in the Suffolk County Probation Department from which she retired in 1990. In 1991, she moved to Oxford to live with her daughter, Kathleen, and her grandson, David, whom she lived with for the rest of her life until she entered Norwich Rehabilitation Center more than a year ago.
Julia Bernadette was an active member of her community and church. After moving to Oxford, she went back to school at SUNY Morrisville, where she graduated in 1993 with an Associate Degree. Painting works of art was her passion, and Julia Bernadette continued to engage in her love of art and painting for much of her later years. She loved Oxford and participated in many of the activities in the community. She faithfully supported and attended the Oxford Farmer's Market and was always first in line for home-made pies. She regularly ate at the local restaurants, particularly Roma's, Nina' s, and Hoppies. Julia Bernadette loved and supported the music and art venues available in Chenango County, such as Six- On- The Square, exhibits at Golden Artist, Colorscape Chenango, and the Chenango Council of the Arts, even displaying her artwork there a few times. She was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and continued taking classes to prepare for and enter lay ministry in Social Justice. She loved her parish friends and family and was very active in St. Joseph parish activities. For many years, she volunteered at the NYS Veteran's Home in Oxford and on the Chenango County Community Mental Health Board.
Julia Bernadette loved her family, her friends, her Irish heritage, and her life. She welcomed all into her life and her home.
Although Bernadette dedicated her life to her family, she was an independent, free spirit and took advantage of any social activity and travels life presented. She would never pass up an opportunity to travel, attend a party or a dinner gathering, and spend quality time with friends and family.
We can be sure she is singing, dancing, laughing, and sharing cups of tea or a glass of wine with her family and friends who greet and meet her on her journey home. While Julia Bernadette will be greatly missed, we are assured she is home with God and those she loves and who love her and have waited for her to return.
Her family would like to thank the Norwich Rehabilitation Center staff and administration for taking care of her so well, as if they were her family, too.
