Leslie A. Reiss, 65, of Oxford, NY, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2024, surrounded by her loving family after a long and courageous battle with cholangiocarcinoma. She was a devoted wife, a cherished mother and grandmother, a beloved friend, and a dedicated caregiver and educator.
Originally from New Jersey, Leslie later moved with her family to Oxford, where her father, Milton Hubschmitt Jr., worked with Contel/Frontier, and her mother, Helen, contributed to Oxford Academy and Central Schools as the cafeteria manager. It was in Oxford that Leslie met her husband, Gerard (Gerry), with whom she shared 47 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they raised four children—Kellie, Michael, Dr. Jessica (Eric of Okemos, MI), and Kyle (Christine of Oneonta, NY)—and were blessed with two grandchildren, Emmalee and Otto.
Leslie was a nurturing soul who took great pride in raising her children. After they were grown, she founded the Oxford After School Program through the Norwich YMCA, demonstrating her deep commitment to the community. She then began a 23-year career as a teacher's aide with Norwich City Schools, where she touched countless lives with her kindness and patience.
Her greatest joy came from spending time with her children, grandchildren, friends, and extended family. Leslie also found happiness in her travels to Cape Cod and the Outer Banks. She cherished attending her granddaughter’s sporting events cheering on the Oxford Blackhawks and watching her grandson learn to walk and talk.
Leslie is preceded in death by her parents, Milton and Helen Hubschmitt, and her uncle, Roger Hubschmitt. She leaves behind her beloved husband, Gerard; her four children and their spouses; her treasured grandchildren; her brother, Michael (Nancy); her nieces, Tracy and Krista; her uncle, Larry Hubschmitt; and her loyal canine companion, Rumble.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Behe Funeral Home Inc. 21 Main Street, Oxford NY 13830. Leslie will be honored with a graveside service on September 28, 2024 at 12:00PM officiated by Pastor David Kirch. To all those attending the graveside service the family requests that everyone dress as if they were heading on summer vacation with bright and beautiful colors to honor the beautiful life Leslie lived. There will be a luncheon gathering immediately following the services at the St. Joseph's Church Hall. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who supported Leslie and helped care for her over the past 16 months, especially the Roberts family and Chenango County Hospice. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider making a donation to Chenango County Hospice in Leslie’s memory. Friends and family may share memories and condolences by visiting www.behefuneralhome.com
