Obituary of Bernard J Fionte

Bernard F. Fionte, 90, of Whitney Point, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 12, 2021, at the NYS Veterans Home in Oxford, NY. He was born in Lawrence, MA, and graduated from Boston University. Throughout his career in broadcasting, he was a prominent newscaster in New England and in the Southern Tier of New York. He served as a News Director of WNBF-TV in Binghamton from 1968, anchoring Communications Centre 12 and Action News, and later as News Director at WMGC-TV (now WIVT) and at WICZ-TV. He also served as News Director for WNBF Radio and WKOP Radio. His fellow broadcasters in Binghamton presented him with their "Living Legend" award in 2005 and he was inducted into the Southern Tier Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame inaugural class of 2008. He served as a communications expert in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife, Sally; son, John (TN); and daughter Rozella (Binghamton). Also, stepsons, Dr. Joseph Campbell (MA) and Jeffrey Campbell (MI); Grandchildren: Elizabeth, Emily, Nolan, and Delaney; and beloved dogs ChaWong and Mike. As an avid animal lover, Fionte was a power behind replacing the BC humane society's euthanasia gas chamber in favor of more humane end-of- life procedures. The family would appreciate donations in his memory to the Humane Society at 167 Conklin Ave, Binghamton, NY 13903. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Behe Funeral Home Inc. Oxford, NY.
