Diane Thorne

Obituary of Diane C. Thorne

Diane Thorne, 70, of Oxford, NY passed away on December 23, 2021 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Diane was born on March 12, 1951 to MaryJane and Marc Miller in Huron, South Dakota. After Diane graduated from Miller High School, she went on to study music at Huron Teacher's College. It was in college where Diane met the love of her life, Larry Thorne. She and Larry moved to NY and were married on November 25, 1971. Diane started teaching piano lessons out of her home in 1975 and continued to teach hundreds of children and adults for more than 40 years when she was forced to retire due to her illness. Diane loved taking family vacations, playing the piano, writing music, baking cookies and breads, walking her dog, exercising and being in the theater. Diane was co-founder of the Oxford Civic Theatre where she wrote the scores to numerous musicals, her favorite being "The Last Doll". Diane will forever be known as Oxford's piano teacher who made the best cookies, but to those who loved her most she will be remembered as Nana. Diane is survived by her husband Larry Thorne; her daughter, Holly and son-in-law Jason Finch; her son, Lance and daughter-in-law Amy Denz Thorne; her three granddaughter's Jillian and Jocelyn Finch and Nora Thorne; her sister, Rita and brother-in-law Michael Golden; her sister, Teresa and brother-in-law Jim Eschenbaum; her brother David and sister-in-law Holly Miller; her brother Scott and sister-in-law Beth Miller; her sister-in-law Laurie Nisbet; her brother-in-law Gary and sister-in-law Dee Thorne; her sister-in-law Susan Thorne and Willie Commandant; several nieces and nephews; her good friends, Maryellen Wentz and Joan Leonard and last but not least, her faithful dog, Missy. Diane was predeceased by her parents, and her sister, Patricia Dolan. Finally, the family asks that in honor of Diane that you take time to be a good neighbor. Check on the elderly, the homebound…make sure that the people in your community are doing okay. Smile at people when you walk by them and take a minute to ask how they're doing. It's the little things that she did that made the world a better place. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Behe Funeral Home Inc. 21 Main Street, Oxford NY 13830. At this time there are no funeral services. A celebration of life will be held at some point in the future when people can gather outdoors and have a party. Until then, be well.
